Living Permit – Guide to Living in Beijing, China

The next step after receiving Working Permit, Visa and entering China is applying for the living permit / residence permit, which will be an extension of your visa. Almost entire paperwork is normally taken care of by the employer, however, there are a couple of things that you will need to do.

Registration in the Local Police Office.

After you have arrived to Beijing, China, you get 24 hours to get registered in a local police station. If you are staying in a hotel, the front office will do it for you. However, if you rent an apartment you are obligated to go to the police station yourself.

You need to bring your passport, its copy (main page and visa), the rental agreement and a copy of the apartment owner’s ID. In around 5 minutes, you will receive a temporary residence slip.

Health Check.

After that your employer will set up a health check for you in a special hospital for foreigner located far out in the north of Beijing. It takes around 1hr to get there from the Beijing central area. The examination itself takes around 20-30 minutes. You will have to do a blood test, X-Ray and a doctor exams.

The fee for the check varies from RMB 600 to 800.

Visiting Public Security Bureau (PSB).

After the first two processes the employer will take care of the rest, except for the final step – your presence is required in PSB for a brief interview and a photo.

Couple of weeks after that you will have to wait until the PSB returns your passport with a living permit in it.
