Everyone know Peking Opera as something really strange. Yes, that’s true… Have to be honest there. Not everyone is going to like it. Not everyone is going to appreciate it. But everyone should definitely try to experience it. Anyways, what can be scarier that experiencing Wangfujing food street, right?
Back in the days my best friend went for a surprise-date to Peking Opera and she gave me a review, which was surely not positive. So during these two years I have refused going there. But this year since my fiance insisted, I could not say no.
I got an advice from my hotel’s concierge about the theatre – she suggested Liyuan in Qianmen for people who go for Peking opera for the first time just for an experience. If you are familiar with it, you might consider going elsewhere to a more traditional theatre.
So at 7pm everyone starts gathering as for half an hour prior to the show, one of the actors come out to do the facial makeup for the show, which is another great thing to witness.
And after the show starts.
Peking Opera is not just one story, it is basically a combination of a few. We watched a love story “Autumn River” with a young nun who fell in love with a scholar and requested an old boatman to take her to him.
Followed by an extremely beautiful performance by a lady with two ribbons, who did an impressing program.
And final part – “Farewell My Concubine” – the longest performance of a couple and then a sword show.
For me it was just a perfect way to experience Peking Opera as I have not got overloaded or tired and it ended just in time not to become irritating. If you want a little trial, this will be a perfect place to go. Let’s see where we are going to end up next week.
